When you work for yourself and work from home, it is so easy to “be on call” 24/7. It is difficult to get off work mode. I will admit it. I work too much and by too much, I mean all the time. I’m either researching online, sending a gazillion emails, setting up appointments, doing a walk-through … and then there is the social media world. As an event designer, I am pretty much expected to have my website looking great, have a blog, tweet, have a facebook page, and now pinterest. I really do LOVE each and every one of these things, but to be honest – it gets exhausting!! I feel like if I haven’t made a post in a few days or I haven’t instagramed a fun craft, I’m out of the game. That people think I’m falling behind. It’s a lot of pressure. I am constantly seeing everyone in my network SO on top of it all and frankly doing it a lot better than I am.
That’s when I have to step back. I make the realization that sometimes I can’t because I am busy working for the clients that I currently have. It is much more important to me to devote my work, passion, and energy to them since they have already put their faith in me. I want to stay on top of my game and on top of business for them.
That is why I will be taking a little “break”, but this time it is not a vacation. I will be heading to SXSW (South by Southwest) in Austin, Texas, March 8-March13. It is a HUGE interactive conference that hosts panels and influential speakers in the digital world. I am making an investment in ME. There is no company sending me, no agenda I have to follow. Sure, there will be some bloggers (from Design Sponge and Cupcakes and Cashmere) that will surely inspire me within the world I live. But deep down, I am an entrepreneur and interested in oh so much more. I can’t wait to be inspired in business, in being a start-up, in future opportunities. I look forward to having a break from all the frills and perfectness of the wedding and event world.
I don’t know what to expect. I am not sure exactly what I will discover or how I will be inspired, but I already can’t wait to show you.
