If you follow my instagram feed ( @staceylynndesign), being an event planner seems super fun. And it is! I completely love it. But it really isn’t as glamorous as we make it seem all the time. And you NEED to know that before you consider jumping head first into this industry.
I get a lot of inquiries from people who want to be an intern or an assistant for our weddings. And I love it. The industry can always use more inspired and enthusiastic planners. When I really see a strong interest, I will sometimes take a chance and add an extra assistant to help on event days. BUT THEN – These people are the first to text the morning of a wedding to cancel because something came up. Don’t worry – I totally plan on it so it isn’t a big deal. I have my on staff assistants that are tried and true and only add an extra “newbie” to test them out. Guess what. Not showing up = fail.
I get it… all of a sudden Saturday rolls around, your friends are all going out for dinner and drinks and that once glamorous sounding job of setting up beautiful tables and being a part of a wedding day doesn’t seem so appealing. We work a lot. We work weekends. And on that day – we are staff, not guests.
I love my job. I love that I have been attracting clients who want to push traditional boundaries and have a keen eye for style. But this job is NOT for everyone and most of the time, I’m working on emails, excel sheets and organizing contracts which are hardly glamorous. Plus, our busiest hours are when everyone else is off work and having fun dinners and gatherings. So, if you are looking to get into this industry, I just ask that you take a step back from the fun stuff we post on social media and realize that there will be pretty big sacrifices. Luckily for me – they are totally worth it.
